About Stitchza

Stitchza works out how much cloth a garment needs for Pakistani tailoring — in gaz, at the width of the cloth you actually have.

Why this site exists

Every general fabric calculator online returns a single fixed yardage. That figure comes from Western sewing patterns, printed for 45" or 60" quilting cotton. It is close to useless at a Pakistani cloth counter, where the same suit can need 5.51 gaz on 36" cloth and 3.10 gaz on 58" cloth.

The difference is not a rounding error. It is 78% more cloth for the identical garment, and no calculator that ignores width can tell you about it.

How the numbers are worked out

There is no lookup table behind these tools. Each calculator lays the actual garment pieces out across the width of the cloth, the way a tailor arranges them on a cutting table, and reports the running length that uses.

• Body panels are sized from your chest measurement plus fit ease plus seam allowance.
• The cloth width decides how many pieces fit in a row — and cloth is only ever consumed in whole rows, which is why the answer jumps in steps rather than sliding smoothly.
• Kali panels are treated as trapezoids and interlocked, because that is how they are actually cut. Every extra panel advances by the mean of its top and hem width.
• One inch is deducted for selvedge before anything is laid out.

The exact allowances used are listed on the measurements page, so you can check them against your own tailor's practice rather than taking them on trust.

Where the figures come from

Anything on this site presented as a fact — shrinkage ranges, brand pack meterage, fabric width bands, size chart figures — is taken from a named published source and carries the date it was checked. Where sources disagree, or where a figure is a range rather than a number, the page says so instead of picking a tidy figure.

Where a number is calculated rather than researched, it is calculated live in your browser from the inputs you give. Nothing is estimated from memory.

What these tools cannot do

Being clear about the limits matters more than sounding authoritative:

• These are buying estimates, not cutting plans. A tailor cutting your actual cloth will make judgements no calculator can anticipate.
• The models assume straight-cut and kali construction. Panelled, draped, asymmetric and heavily worked garments need more.
• Shrinkage figures are published ranges, not promises. The same fibre behaves differently depending on weave, finish and wash temperature.
• No prices are quoted anywhere. Rates change constantly, so every cost tool uses only the figures you enter yourself.

Who runs this

Stitchza is an independent site. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any clothing brand, mill, retailer or tailoring business, and brand names appear here only to describe specifications those brands publish themselves.

We do not sell cloth, take orders, or run a shop. There is nothing to buy here and no affiliate arrangement behind any figure on the site — which is the main reason the width comparisons say what they say rather than what a seller would prefer.
