These tools give you a buying estimate. They do not replace a tailor, and there are specific situations where they will be wrong.
The assumptions every calculation makes
Rather than a vague warning, here is exactly what is assumed. If your garment breaks one of these, expect the figure to be low:
- Straight-cut construction for the suit calculator; interlocked kali panels for the flared calculator. Draped, asymmetric, panelled and heavily worked garments are not modelled.
- Standard seam and hem allowances, listed openly on the measurements page. Your tailor may work to different ones.
- Cloth with no direction: no nap, no one-way print, no border, and no repeat that has to be matched. Where a tool can price that penalty it does so and says which figure is which.
- No shrinkage. Shrinkage is a separate allowance on the allowance page.
- No lining, unless you switch it on in the cost calculator.
- The cloth is a full, unflawed width for its whole length.
Researched figures
Shrinkage percentages, fabric width bands, brand pack meterage and size chart figures come from published third-party sources, each named on the page with the date it was checked. They are typical ranges reported by suppliers and brands, not measurements we have taken, and not standards. Brands and mills change specifications between seasons.
Costs
No price, rate or charge is quoted anywhere on this site. The cost calculator does arithmetic on figures you type in yourself. Nothing here is financial advice, and no comparison should be read as a recommendation of a particular shop, brand or tailor.
When to ignore the calculator
- When the cloth is expensive or hard to re-source. Buy the higher figure.
- When a warning appears saying panels will not fit flat — that garment needs piecing or a different cut, and the number shown will run short.
- When your tailor gives you a different figure and has seen the cloth. He has information the calculator does not.
