Kali panels alternate — one point up, one point down — so a pair fills a rectangle instead of wasting the taper.

Why alternating the kalis saves so much
A kali is a trapezoid: narrow at the waist, wide at the hem. If every panel is laid the same way up, each one occupies its full hem width across the cloth and the narrow end is wasted.
Turn every second panel upside down and the narrow end of one sits in the gap left by the wide end of its neighbour. A nested pair takes the top width plus the bottom width, instead of twice the bottom width. On a 12-kali frock with a 110" ghera that is the difference between four panels per row and five.
This only works when the cloth has no direction. A one-way print, a nap, or a border along one selvedge forces every panel to face the same way — which is exactly what the second figure in the result panel is telling you.
How the kali is worked out

The practical consequence: raising the kali count usually lowers the cloth, because narrower panels nest more efficiently, even though the ghera stays the same. Try 12 against 16 against 24 in the calculator and watch the figure move.

Questions people ask
More kalis means more cloth, right?
Usually the opposite. The ghera decides the total hem width; the kali count only decides how that width is chopped up. Narrower panels nest into the cloth more tightly, so a 16-kali version of the same ghera often needs less than an 8-kali one.
Does this include lining?
No. A lehenga or a sheer frock usually needs a full lining at the same kali shape, so double the figure if you are lining it edge to edge. Can-can and nets are bought separately by the metre.
What is ghera exactly?
The full circumference of the hem, all the way round. If your tailor gives you a half-ghera measurement, double it before entering it here.
My print runs one way. What do I do?
